Month 5: Ethics & Professional Boundaries
South Carolina's required Month 5 competency topic: professional conduct, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and handling difficult situations with clients and families.
Why Boundaries Protect Everyone
Caregiving is intimate work -- you're in someone's home, helping with personal care, and often becoming one of the most consistent relationships in a client's life. That closeness is part of what makes good care possible, but without clear professional boundaries it can also lead to burnout, exploitation (in either direction), and situations that hurt both the client and the caregiver. Boundaries aren't about being cold or distant; they're about keeping the relationship safe, sustainable, and centered on the client's wellbeing rather than on personal needs on either side.
