Month 3: First Aid, Medication Monitoring & Recognizing Medical Emergencies
South Carolina's required Month 3 competency topic: basic first aid, how to prompt and monitor medication without administering it, and recognizing signs a client needs urgent medical attention.
Your Role: Monitoring, Not Administering
As a home care caregiver (not a licensed nurse), your role with medication is almost always to prompt and monitor, not to administer. Prompting means reminding the client it's time for their medication, reading the label with them if needed, and watching them take it themselves. Monitoring means noticing whether the medication was taken as scheduled, watching for side effects, and documenting what happened. Administering -- physically giving an injection, drawing up a dose, or placing a pill in someone's mouth -- is outside your scope unless you hold a specific certification and your state and agency explicitly authorize it. When in doubt about what you're allowed to do for a specific client, ask your supervisor or the client's nurse before acting.
