Month 1: Confidentiality, Accountability & Abuse/Neglect Prevention
South Carolina's required Month 1 competency topic: client confidentiality and HIPAA basics, your accountability as a caregiver, and how to recognize and report abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
Why This Topic Comes First
Every other skill you learn as a caregiver sits on top of trust. Clients and families let you into their homes, their medical history, and their most vulnerable moments. This module covers the three things that protect that trust: keeping client information confidential, being accountable for the care you provide and document, and knowing how to spot and report abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Whether you work for an agency or care for clients independently, these obligations are the same -- they come from state regulation and from basic professional ethics, not just from an employer's policy manual.
