How to Become a Caregiver in South Carolina: Step-by-Step

1. Understand the roles available

"Caregiver" covers a range of roles with different requirements: personal care aides generally need the least formal certification and focus on daily living support (bathing, meals, mobility); companion caregivers focus on non-medical support and companionship; home health aides and CNAs typically involve more clinical tasks and carry their own certification requirements. Most people start as a personal care aide or companion caregiver and can specialize from there.

2. Build job-ready skills before you apply

You don't need a formal degree to start, but completing a few foundational courses signals to agencies that you're serious and reduces how much on-the-job training they'll need to invest in you.
