Month 12: Nutrition, Feeding Assistance & Assistive Devices
From the SCDHHS approved topic list: nutrition basics, safe feeding assistance, and common assistive devices used in home care.
Why Nutrition Matters More in Home Care
Aging and chronic illness often bring changes that make good nutrition harder to maintain: reduced appetite, difficulty chewing or swallowing, medication side effects that alter taste, reduced mobility that makes cooking harder, and social isolation that removes the motivation to prepare a full meal for just one person. Poor nutrition in turn makes almost everything else worse -- slower wound healing, weaker immune response, increased fall risk from weakness, and faster cognitive decline. As a caregiver, you're often in the best position to notice early signs of poor nutrition and to help make good nutrition realistic and appealing, not just theoretically ideal.
