Dementia & Alzheimer's Care Fundamentals
A comprehensive, practical guide to caring for clients with dementia or Alzheimer's disease: communication techniques, behavior de-escalation, safety, daily routines, and caregiver wellbeing.
Understanding Dementia
Dementia is not a single disease but a general term for a decline in memory, thinking, and reasoning severe enough to interfere with daily life -- Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause, but vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and others exist too, each with somewhat different patterns. Understanding that dementia is a progressive brain condition -- not stubbornness, not 'acting out,' not something the client can simply try harder to overcome -- is the foundation for compassionate, effective care. Behaviors that seem frustrating or confusing (repeating questions, resisting care, wandering) almost always make sense once you understand what the person is experiencing.
